Plumbing Inspectors enhance the safety and livability of structures by performing field inspections of industrial, commercial, and multifamily residential construction projects for compliance with applicable plumbing codes and regulations. Independent field inspections of new and remodeled plumbing installations are performed to insure compliance with the State of Oregon Plumbing Codes and the City of Portland plumbing regulations.

About Our Job
As aPlumbing Inspector, you will provide excellent customer service, ensure equitable service delivery to both external and internal customers, and uphold the Bureau's customer service standards in a challenging and fast-paced environment. In this role, you work closely with customers to help them understand how codes and other regulations apply to their projects. Typical duties include performing inspections, writing inspection reports, entering inspection results via telephone and computer, maintaining detailed and accurate records, interpreting information from plans and maps, and explaining codes and policy to the public. The work requires knowledge of the relevant codes and regulations, and discretion and judgment in applying them. This position will write detailed inspection reports and take appropriate action. The Plumbing Inspector also assists in field training of other inspectors; and responds to calls to work during emergencies. Plumbing Inspectors are responsible for providing assistance in an equitable manner to diverse customers.

A competitive candidate for the position of Plumbing Inspector will possess the qualifications/ competencies identified in the Position Description above and the knowledge, skills and abilities in this Ideal Candidate Profile. To Qualify

To qualify the candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:
  1. Knowledge and experience in applying provisions of the Oregon Plumbing Specialty Code and related amendments.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in the practices and materials used in plumbing installations, and in evaluating plumbing construction methods and materials.
  3. Ability to prepare reports, write correspondence and input and retrieve information using computer software.
  4. Knowledge and skill in interpreting and explaining technical plumbing information and plumbing code requirements to knowledgeable and lay people.
  5. Knowledge and skill in reading and interpreting plumbing blueprints and calculations, and skill in drafting detailed plumbing drawings and records.
Applicants must also possess:
  • A valid state driver's license and anacceptable driving record;and
  • An Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC);and
  • An Oregon Plumbing Specialty Code Inspector (PI) Certification.
Special Requirements
  • An Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) certification as a Cross-Connection Specialist may be required for certain assignments.
  • An Oregon Medical Gas Plumbing Inspector Certification (MGI) may be required for certain assignments.
Residential Inspections Section-Plumbing Inspectors assigned to the Residential Inspections Section are required to obtain an Oregon Residential Electrical Certification, and an Oregon Residential Structural Certification, and must meet the Oregon certification requirements to perform residential mechanical inspections within five years from date of assignment.
