Job Description

Currently there is one (1) part-time vacancy in the Community Development Department.This positionmay work up to 30 hours per week. The eligible list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

To perform a variety of residential building inspection duties at various stages of construction, alteration and repair; to maintain a variety of inspection related records; and to provide information and assistance to the public.

Building Inspector I: This is the entry level classification in the Building Inspector series. Positions assigned to this class perform the more routine and standardized tasks. The Building Inspector I position is considered to be in a training status and assignments are performed within the procedural framework established by higher level employees. However, as experience is acquired, the employee performs with increasing responsibility and is expected to be performing at the II or journey level within the prescribed time frame.

Building Inspector II: This is the journey level class in the Building Inspector series. Position in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Building Inspector I, or when filled from the outside, require prior building inspection work experience. Appointment to the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class requiring a complete knowledge of department policies and procedures and meet the qualification standards for the class. A Building Inspector II is expected to perform the entire range of combination inspections (building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical) of a variety of single and multi-family residences.

Building Inspector I: Receives immediate supervision from the Principal Building Inspector. May receive technical supervision from higher-level inspection staff.

Building Inspector II: Receives general supervision from the Principal Building Inspector. May exercise functional and technical supervision over less experienced staff.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate
A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of responsible combination residential building inspection experience in the building construction field as a journey level plumber, electrician, carpenter or related craftsperson is highly desirable.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License/Certificate : Possession of ICC Building Certification is required; certification as Combination Building Inspector is highly desirable.

Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.
