Essential Job Functions

A Locksmith is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: duplicates keys on electrically operated key cutting machines; issues keys and locks, and keeps related records; opens locks which cannot be opened by ordinary means; installs, adjusts, repairs, and rebuilds locks; changes safe combinations; repairs and rebuilds safe locking mechanisms; adjusts and repairs related door closing and locking devices, including panic hardware; establishes, expands, or modifies master key code systems; changes key and cylinder combinations in accordance with changes in the master key system; troubleshoots inoperative locking hardware to determine the cause of malfunction;uses powered and hand tools as necessary for this trade; enters and completes service requests on computer database; makes appropriate door hardware recommendations based upon American with Disabilities Act (ADA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Uniform Building Codes (UBC); and maintains, updates and performs credential programming on established access control systems.

Requirements
SELECTIONREQUIREMENTS:
Four years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and combination locking devices and the maintenance of master key systems, one year of which must have been at the journey level.*

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skill, and training to perform a full range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and experience in the installation, maintenance, repair and programming of various electronic access control systems and locking devices such as Schlage AD400 and Vanderbilt SMS Enterprise.
  • Experienceworking for a large facility, municipality/government agency with multiple facilities and locations.
  • Experience working with Small Format Interchangeable Core A2 key systems.
  • Possess current Locksmith License issued by the State of California Bureau of Security & Investigative Services.
  • Possess current Contractor's License issued by the State of California Contractors State License Board for C28 or D16 Classifications.


Additional Information
EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an interview covering training, experience, personal fitness, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higherin order to be placed on the eligible register.

Final results will be sent by U.S. postal mail. Test scores cannot be disclosed over the phone.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

FINGERPRINTING AND SECURITY CLEARANCE

Before a final appointment is made to this position, candidates are subject to security clearance which includes fingerprinting. An individual may be withheld from appointment, if he/she has a conviction record incompatible with the essential duties of the position for which he/she has applied.
