. Position Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled work identifying, installing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing, fabricating, rebuilding and replacing lock cylinders, combination locks, and other institutional hardware.
The essential functions of this class include:
Nature of Work
- Installing and maintaining ADA approved locks and related hardware;
- Using hand and power tools such as saws, files, screwdrivers, hammers, levels, lock picks, installation jigs, grinders, cutters, electric drills and key cutters;
- Servicing, adjusting, repairing and performing related installation of locking equipment including mechanical, low voltageelectronic locks, overhead closers and automatic door closers;
- Opening locks when keys or combinations do not operate by picking locks, impressioning key blanks or disassembling locks;
- Fabricating original master keys and duplicate keys using knowledge of key and master code systems;
- Setting up master keys system by numeric progression to create levels of security;
- Maintaining key records and security of duplicate keys;
- Explaining and carrying out existing methods and procedures related to all locksmithing operations;
- Making routine contacts with other departments in connection with maintenance activities;
- Ordering supplies;
- Using two-way radio, cell phone or pager to communicate with managers, co-workers and clients;
- preserving the order and cleanliness of the shop and vehicle;
- Maintaining a valid driver's license and driving to various locations;
- May use a personal computer to store and retrieve key codes, prepare reports of time worked and materials expended, and communicate via e-mail;
- Performs related duties as required.
The position requires considerable bending, kneeling, crouching, and lifting of objects up to 51 lbs. The position also requires lifting and moving doors weighing up to 120 lbs. using lifting equipment and the ability to precisely work with objects 1/8" in diameter; and the willingness to be on call and respond to emergency situations. Working conditions may necessitate working at sites greater than 90 decibels; may include heights, streets and roadways, poorly ventilated areas, and working in confined spaces. May require the ability to wear appropriate forms of respiratory protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), and pass a medical qualification exam for use of appropriate respirators. Working Hours:
Day Shift (General work hours: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm - Monday through Friday); may be required. Overtime, weekends and holiday work may be required. Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of verifiable journey-level experience as a locksmith; AND
- Possession and maintenance of a valid class "C" driver license and good driving record.
- Demonstrated experience in Medeco Biaxial Keying and key cutting.
- Demonstrated experience in personal computer to store and retrieve key codes, prepare reports of time worked and materials expended, and communicate via e-mail.
The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening.
