After submitting this Application, please report to the City of Austin Aquatic Office (2818 San Gabriel Dr, Austin, Texas 78705) for an interview within 7 days. Office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday.17 year old applicants require parent signatures on the applicant paperwork.After the interview, applicants will complete preliminary paperwork. If given a contingent job offer, the offer will be conditional on taking and passing 40 hours of Lifeguard Life Skills training. TRAINING WILL BE OFFERED BY PARKS AND RECREATION DURING THE WEEKENDS AND /OR EVENINGS . YOU MUST PASS THE 40 HOUR COURSE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE POSITION .Returning Swim Coaches will be required to take 16 hours of training instead of the 40 hours required for new swim coaches.Applicants will be required to show I-9 documents to verify proof of citizenship if given a conditional job offer based on completing the training. Bring your social security card to be used for payroll verification.Swim Coaches must have reliable transportation to get to and from work on your assigned work hours.

  • Attend mandatory Aquatic Division Orientation.
  • Attend mandatory paid in-service meetings.
  • Report to work on time for assigned shift(s); and remain free from being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
  • Wear assigned Aquatics Division staff uniform only while on duty.
  • Be able to work weekdays, weekends and holidays; and willing to substitute for others.
  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance duties during assigned shift(s).

Work Schedule/Location:
  • Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.
  • If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Physical Requirements :
  • Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant's needs and safety issues.

Pay Range
$15.25 - $16.50 per hour.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

  • Coaches Neighborhood swim teams.
  • Participates in four tri-meets and one citywide meet.
  • Performs administrative duties.
  • May work as Head Lifeguard/Manager.
  • Verbally communicates with both public and staff.
  • Develops, schedules, and conducts activities and events.
  • Promotes and implements programs and/or special events.
  • Coordinates assigned citywide events.
  • Ensures all events and activities conform to appropriate safety and other rules.
  • Ensures that facilities and equipment used for programs or events are properly set up and maintained.
  • Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
  • Plans, organizes and leads recreational program activities.
  • Maintains, inventories and cares for City property and equipment.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of materials and supplies necessary to conduct programs.
  • Cleans program areas after completion of activities and at end of work day.
  • Demonstrates cooperative behavior with team, supervisors and the public.
  • Monitors and records compliance with safety and department guidelines and rules.
  • Maintains attendance, activity, supply and equipment records.
  • Assists in development of lesson or activity plans and program evaluations.
  • Communicates with a wide range of people.
  • Provides information and directions.
  • Encourages and guides participants.
  • Sets up equipment for scheduled activities/events.
  • Coaches and officiates sports activities when needed.
